Open Education: Education Cloud Available for Personal, Academic, or Training Business Use

Eucalyptus to Offer Education Cloud Rental Program

If you are an administrator or student who wants to practice your Eucalyptus cloud skills, this post is for you. If you are a training provider or academic institution that wants to offer an education experience using Eucalyptus software, this post is also for you.

Starting March 4, 2013, you can rent unsupported user access to a Eucalyptus cloud, or the hardware necessary to build your own cloud, for the purpose of running classroom labs and practice. This offering is available for both professional and personal use, and includes access to appropriate lab materials. Rentals can be purchased using your credit card via Eucalyptus University (http://eucau.eucalyptus.com) or made via a Eucalyptus Salesperson using a purchase order (let me know if you need a sales contact.) The following plan/pricing is available now, with future expansions possible based on customer demand:

Cloud admin pod rental includes a PDF copy of the (now open source) Design, Build, and Manage book (including labs), access to a student desktop environment (virtual machine), and access to two physical servers - one for use as a front-end, the other as a node controller.
  •  Cost per pod: $125 per week.
  • Availability: by noon US Central time on Monday through at least 5pm US Central time on Friday.
  • Number available: 14, plus two spares. If you rent the whole environment, you get access to all 16 pods (and the last two are free).
If you are teaching a cloud user class rather than a cloud admin class, you can also opt for user login access to the preconfigured Education Cloud environment, which is simply the Eucalyptus cloud we use to deploy the student desktop environment. The cost per week is the same since every student user we enable means there is a desktop that cannot be deployed. Time availability and number of logins available (14, or 16 if you rent them all at once) are the same as well.
  • Note: The charges are per student user login or per pod. A training provider is free to double-up students for lab work at no additional cost from Eucalyptus.

Benefits

For academic institutions and training companies wanting to provide lab environments for cloud computing courses, this allows them to do so without incurring the up-front capital expense and ongoing maintenance costs associated with having one. For a company that needs a lab environment like this less than 30-35 weeks per year, the cost benefit of using the Eucalyptus Education Cloud should be significant. In addition, the environment comes preconfigured to work with the open source Design, Build, and Manage materials, and thus requires little to no lab modification on the part of the training provider to make things work for the students.

For individuals, this provides a low-cost practice environment that provides root access to servers and give the full cloud administrator experience over an extended period of time. It can also be a great way to test an idea you have about configuring your own cloud on offsite hardware without having to go through a procurement process and without having to store, manage, repurpose, or dispose of the equipment when you no longer need it.

Some Terms and Conditions

Cloud reservations are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Cloud reservation charges generally cannot be refunded, although we will keep a waitlist and will provide a refund if we can rent your equipment to another user, minus a service fee of 10% of your rental or $25, whichever is greater.

Future Plans

In the future, we are looking at the possibility of supporting single-day rentals or even 1/2-day rentals for those who run short classes or those who need a lower price point and can accomplish everything they need in a single day. Let me know if that is you, and if we get enough requests, we can try to get there sooner rather than later.

We hope that this offering proves useful for those who seek to offer Eucalyptus education opportunities, or for those who would like to have access to hardware to practice their Eucalyptus skills. What do you think? Let me know in the comments, or send me an email: jason.eden@eucalyptus.com. I look forward to hearing from you!
