EucaStart 2.0: The Future of Eucalyptus Consulting

In my last blog post I talked about the origins of the EucaStart 2.0 project and gave a stage-by-stage comparison between it and Dan Nurmi's Eucalyptus Repeatable Deployment Plan. In this entry, I will detail our plans for all of this content and discuss how you can leverage it for your business - whether a customer or a consulting company - as well as how you can contribute back to the project.

A Detailed Guide for Deploying Eucalyptus Clouds

When we have completed and vetted all of the content for the six stages of the EucaStart 2.0 initiative, we will assemble all of this material into a comprehensive, end-to-end guide for how to successfully deploy Eucalyptus in a datacenter. The guide will likely be sourced in the same XML/DITA format as our Design, Build, and Manage (DBM) course materials, will be available on GitHub, and will be licensed via the same Creative Commons license as the DBM course and all Eucalyptus documentation. It will also be available in other formats, including PDF. How the guide might be leveraged will vary based on who is using it.

Customers

Simply put, Eucalyptus customers will be able to take the content of this guide and follow it in order to enable themselves to successfully deploy their own Eucalyptus clouds.

Consulting Companies

Consulting companies will be free to use this guide to quickly bring their technical staff up to speed and build out a successful Eucalyptus practice whether they are a formal Eucalyptus partner organization or not.

Training Companies

Training companies will be able to take this content, add some presentation material, and use it as the source for in-depth training courses on Eucalyptus deployment, design, and troubleshooting.

Our hope is that the EucaStart 2.0 Design and Deployment Guide will enable anyone with a business need to deploy Eucalyptus for whatever purpose they desire.

Automated Environment Testing Tools for Pre and Post-Cloud Deployment

In addition to a thorough written guide, we plan to produce and and open-source a number of scripts or similar tools designed to assist in the final three stages of the EucaStart 2.0 process. This work will draw from two projects currently in the open, Nurse Euca (pre-deployment checks) and Doctor Euca (post-deployment checks) that can be observed in real time here.

This is Open Source - Contribute Please!

The Open PS initiative at Eucalyptus can only reach maximum effectiveness if you, the Eucalyptus community, helps us make it as good as possible. We want your insights, additions, and corrections to our work. You will be able to do so via the standard GitHub tools, but we also welcome feedback and comments made via the euca-users mailing list or whatever mechanism you deem appropriate. You are welcome to send me an email any time as well: jason.eden@eucalyptus.com.

It is our sincere hope that you will find this to be an invaluable resource and will use it to help us spread the word about it. Thanks in advance for your interest and assistance. Please let us know if you have any thoughts about the general direction of the project in the comments below. We look forward to hearing from you!
